Stokes-It's nice to finally have a true point guard, and with some quicks and speed too. Inconsistent shooting thus far, but to handle the West Virginia press the way he did, I'm impressed. Upside is tremendous with the flashes he's shown. Needs consistency and needs to develop a dribble drive floater or pull up jumper in the lane, where he can score or be enough of a threat to score and dump it. Good defender for a freshman
Wade-fantastic potential, but not fantastic yet. In my opinion, has the best looking jump shot of anyone on the team. For some reason he can't hit shit in the first half. Is one of those guys that you look at, at the beginning of the 4th quarter and think he hasn't done anything, but has 14 points. Needs to be more aggressive and most importantly need to get a lot stronger and be a lot more balanced footwork-wise so he doesn't have to gather himself so much to finish in the paint. Currently he is playing more like a 6'4" post because of his need to pull the ball into his stomach, gather himself, and then take the ball up. Has racked up more fantom fouls than anyone I've seen not playing against a dirty dollar Bill Self team. That has to stop at some point, because we need him on the floor. Lots and lots of potential.
Barry Brown-Love what he brings defensively and has a knack for scoring for a freshman, however I just don't think he will ever be a consistent scorer with that screwy turn your body sideways shot (see Iwundu). Not that he won't score a lot, I just think he will be inconsistent over his career because of his form.
Budke-Get off the guys ass people. It's not his fault he's the only post player sub we have. 100% effort 100% of the time. Almost always in the right place. He is Tyler Hansborough (and I hate that guy) in a 6'5" body. If he was 3 inches taller he would be really good and if he was 6" taller he would be Tyler Hansborough, although revered, instead of hated by me.
Hurt-He is what he is and that's a 6'11" waste of space. Can't defend. Doesn't want to play post defense or offense. Wants to be a guard in a 6'11, sloth-like body. Give me Budke any day. Probably not the correct assessment, but anyone that large with that lack of productivity draws my ire.
Iwundu-Still can't decide what to think here. Can be a great asset to take away the opponents leading scorer. His scoring depends on whether the other team allows him to get to the rim, which isn't going to happen too much in the big 12. Great handles for a guy his height, but desperately needs to develop a short pull up jumper. Outside shot is ugly as he turns completely sideways (see Brown).
Ervin-I cringe every time he comes in, but he does a lot of little things well. Rebounds great for a point guard, but as Fitz said in a podcast - he's that 40 something guy at the YMCA, and when he puts up a shot I'm always thinking NNOOOOOOO, but when it occasionally goes in, it's a NOOyeah.
Edwards-Similar to Iwundu. Can be fantastic at times, but really needs to be able to get to the rim to be successful, and I don't see that happening in the Big 12. Could see where we really miss him next year, because with his leaping ability he is one heck of a rebounding guard. However a 2 guard that can't shoot from outside is a big reason why these zone defenses are eating our lunch.
Weber-I don't harbor the hate a lot of people on here do toward him, however, our zone offense is horrendous and we've seen zone enough now to be accustomed to it. I can live with the fact that we can't shoot well enough outside to beat the zone, but we still look lost against it, even after seeing it multiple times. We don't have the pure shooters to beat a zone consistently, but I'm personally dumbfounded that we don't pass the ball quickly around the perimeter and even more so that the ball never goes into the paint, let alone into the paint and then back out. We have guys working their butt off in the paint to get open, and while they do get open, they never get the ball. In my old school basketball, you kicked to ball inside to not only get buckets inside, but to collapse the zone to get open shots outside. Our zone offense has no desire to collapse the defense by getting the ball into the post.
If you made it through this novel, I feel for you. Flame away.
BTW, if you made it through this. Baller-Status-A week or so ago after you sat behind the bench at a game, you said something about Iwundu possibly being headed down the same path as some on last years team. Don't remember exactly how you phrased it and not trying to put words in your mouth, but have been curious about your comment every since, and wondered if you could expand on it.
