Solomon Valley NCK Catbacker Convention in Beloit at Beloit Country Club tonight. No student athletes, but we did have Tom Hayes, Jeff Mittie, and Drew Speraw (Director of Basketball Operations for Men's Team.) Here's just a few small notes from the night. Some of these might be repetitive from past info, but I figured I'd share what was said.
Football-Typical "Bill Snyder like" speech. Coach Hayes didn't give us much of substance. He did say that with spread and fast paced offenses, it plays into what K-State likes to do which is get the ball back and hold time of possession (as if that is news to any of you.) Elijah Lee is his starting MLB as of right now, and Travis Britz is back and healthy. When asked about starting QB race, all he would say was, "It is very open and will be competitive."
Men's Basketball-Iwundu and Edwards are both bigger and stronger from off-season workouts. DJ's foot is much better and getting back to normal. When talking of the newcomers, Speraw said that they "looked for winners" when getting new faces. Corlbe Ervin is a taller, stronger PG who brings leadership and can defend multiple positions. Kamau Stokes is a shooter who provides a nice 1-2 punch with Ervin. Barry Brown was a player that many teams tell Kansas State that they stole and was very under the radar. He played with tons of top recruits in AAU. He plays very quick and shifty. Speraw said that Stokes and Brown are the future of the program at the PG position. Dante Williams and Isaiah Maurice will, "provide an actual center rather than 6'7 Thomas Gipson." The staff feels good about sneaking Williams out of Texas without other programs keeping him in-state. Maurice can shoot on outside and will play a lot of 4 position with Dean Wade. Dean Wade is the pride of the class for the coaches. They felt they HAD to have him and Speraw said that his father at Iowa asked if they ever had a legit shot at him not picking K-State. He told him Dean has been bleeding purple his whole life and never had any other consideration for other schools.
Women's Basketball-Mittie said he was impressed with the work ethic and basketball IQ that Shaelyn Martin brought in as a Freshman. Kendred Wesemann was the so-called "quarterback" of the team last year. She is highly competitive. Breanna Lewis and Erica Young will play in Poland this summer to help develop their games. Coach is very excited about the 2015 class and the Page sisters are a big part of the excitement around the class. On the home and home with UCONN, "It challenges our team and we were trying to raise the level of work on the team. It is without a doubt the biggest challenge you can take."
This all may be old news to everyone, but that's the basic gist of what was talked about tonight in Beloit.
