I am not there. I can't celebrate a moral victory from last night's game.
It is hard for me to celebrate a loss like this because it very well should have been a W if not for bone headed decisions in the 2nd half. The entire 2nd half the announcers were perplexed about why our offense abandoned our run game. The drive in the 4th quarter when we punted it back to TCU and they took the lead was the beginning of the nail in the coffin for us. I knew for sure that our offense would slow it down, run some time, get some first downs and put more points on the board. I mean, come on, this is a Bill Snyder team. That is what we always do when we have a slim lead late in the game. But what did we do? 3 straight passes, one of which should have been intercepted. Maybe the only moral victory here is that I am glad the game didn't end with an interception on that drive.
At the 4th & 1 call, all of America knew it, but apparently our coaching staff didn't see it coming. If you give the ball back to TCU with almost two minutes left THEY. WILL. SCORE. Forget the fact that Jesse Mack was getting his first significant playing time and they had already been picking on him and having sucess.
Had we gone for it and didn't get it, we would all still be pissed about the play calling that led to this demise, but at least it would have been the right call. Can't fault that.
I couldn't stomach watching the end of that game and seeing TCU slice through our defense like butter for the W, so I called it the night and hit the showers.
Ugh. For me, there is nothing to feel good about here. I actually predicted in a thread on Monday that the Cats would walk away with the W. I knew they had the capability to play the way they did, but didn't know the coaches would gift wrap this game for TCU...and that is what happened.
If someone wants a positive, I've got tons of respect for the O-Line. Pass protection and run protection was outstanding. I really liked that we saw a lot more of the read/option. I don't recall seeing much of that in our previous games with Hubener. Burton and Klein stepped up as best they could. Wish we would have seen more Gronk, especially if you are going to pass as much as we did. The announcers mentioned something about him being the 9th overall NFL prospect from the Big 12. There has got to be a way to utilize him more. We hear all about his athleticism but only have like a handful of designed plays for him that we run sparingly. I know there was one play that was intended for him but the defense picked it up. Our 1st half defense was impressive. 2nd half, TCU's talent was just too much for us. No shame in that.
It was all about the play calling tonight. And the pooch was screwed. That's it. I will be better come Monday, but today I am just hoping the Royals will pull out the W in Houston.
