Alright, so I didn't have a great view of this from my spot in the NEZ. I could see a punch thrown and a massive pile of bodies immediately following. I was curious exactly what happened. Assume there are a bunch of you in my shoes. Watching the replay of the game tonight and have some observations based on the camera angles shown:
The first thing I noticed was there were two separate incidents. I couldn't see this live. Skylar gets hit late and the offensive line goes to get him. Pretty normal, doesn't seem to be any real pushing, shoving, or excessive chatter in this part of the play. Pretty run of the mill late hit on a QB.
About 5 yards down field, Howell is on the white on the TCU sideline chirping. It appears a TCU player (can't tell who) takes a cheap shot on him from behind. I believe at this point, a second flag is thrown on TCU.
From there, all hell breaks loose.
Howell gets up, obviously pissed, and that's when punches start getting thrown. Looks like he gets punched first, then he throws a punch, then he gets thrown to the ground and punched some more. Very difficult to see who does what based on the camera angles.
Deuce is the first player to really go in and try to get Howell out. In the future, we might consider not having our 5'6 leader in the scrum, but hey, he bear hugs Howell and tries to get him out. Coach Tru gets there not long after and helps escort him to the bench.
Coaches do a great job making a wall to keep any players from leaving the sidelines. You can tell they've practiced this - which is kinda funny but also probably saved us some ejections today. A couple players were close to heading that way and they were corraled.
Howell is noticably pissed on the sideline, with a hoard of players around him. They finally get him sat down, and Coach Tru is seen having a pretty intense conversation with him on the bench before the ejection is announced.
TCU players are escorted out first (the left...right...left...right 😂 I didn't hear that in person.) Tru takes Howell to the locker room to a standing O from the NW corner of the stadium.
Overall thought our guys handled themselves well - it could have been much worse than it was. My respect for Truman continues to grow by the game. You can tell the players respect him and he's not afraid to get in the middle of stuff. I hope we can afford to keep him around.
I'd request @ksu_FAN add some gifs to my color commentary here 🙂
Will be curious if the Big 12 takes any additional action against the players involved.
Fight happens at 7:11 in 3Q.
