Is that we never snap the ball when the quarterback first goes under center. Last night, on at least two occasions, we had 3 or fewer yards for a first down. The back covering the slot receiver was playing at least 10 yards off our receiver. It would have been so easy to immediately snap the ball and throw the quick pass. Of course, we didn't do that. After Delton received the call from the sideline, the UCLA back came up to press our slot receiver. It is obvious that UCLA was showing a defensive alignment when we were first under center and then change their alignment to stop what UCLA thought we would audible into. They weren't at all worried about their initial alignment because they knew we wouldn't snap the ball but look to the sideline.
If only we snap the ball when first under center, just a couple of times a game, we could take advantage of this tendency. First, it would give us a couple of easy first downs and force the defense be vigilant when we first go under center. Second it would make it harder for our opponents to show a defensive alignment and then switch their alignment for the actual snap.
