OT - Schools checking phones

Does anyone know if schools have the right to check a kids phone at any time? What if the kid refuses until a parent is present? Can a school call a police officer in to question a kid with out an adult present? I'm talking about minors in middle and high school. Vague questions I know but dont want to go into all the details.
