So the TLDR: I might be considering a new job, in the same line of work and I’m curious to see how others have gone about looking at new jobs and the steps that you have taken during that process.
Here’s the long story:
I’m an engineer (technically an engineer in training) who’s been out of school about 2 years (so 2 more years away from being able to apply for my license) and I’ve been at a smaller company since I got out. It’s been pretty good. I make a comfortable wage, I like the work I’m doing, I like the projects I’m working on, and I like working with the people I work with, and I feel like my compensation is fair, so all in all my time at my current company been pretty good.
But recently we’ve had a decent amount of turnover and I’ve lost 2 of the more experienced engineers that I’ve worked under to other jobs and am probably going to lose a 3rd in the next few weeks. None of them left because they didn’t like the company they were leaving, better opportunities just presented themselves. I can’t fault any of the 3 for leaving for the jobs they left for. But at the same time, I’m a bit worried going to (if it already hasn’t) in an awkward spot with getting/keeping work. And I get nervous about possibly losing all the good mentors my group has.
I think my company is in pretty good shape and I think I could probably stay on in some capacity even if our small group ended folding. I just really like what I’m doing, and if possible I would like the opportunity to keep doing it.
So now I’m at the point where I’m staring to wonder if I should start looking at other opportunities for myself. I have pretty good connections (at least for someone my age) in my industry (which is also a fairly small and close knit industry) and I’ve gotten the chance to work on a few really good projects that (ironically due to partnerships with my current company) I would probably be able to continue to work on. I think there’s about 5 companies who I can think of off the top of my head that I could get an interview with.
But if anyone has any advice on seeking a new job and the steps they would take and things they would consider when going through this process that would be awesome!
Thanks
