I ask this question following the thread about classic movies, and also I'm getting paid to sit here and surf the internet and answer the phone when it rings (business owner knows and approves).
I recently had occasion to watch a documentary about rock band Van Halen's inception. Full disclosure: I've never been a fan of 80s butt rock hair bands. However, there are a few groups, a la Rush, Scorpions and Dream Theater (which are composed of classically trained musicians), Yngwie Malmsteen and his band, and, yes Eddie and Alex Van Halen, whose parents were musician/immigrants, that have earned my respect due to their technical skill and excellence.
I used to laugh when Van Halen's "Jump" would come on the air. But after actually listening to it and others, such as the first three tracks on their self-titled album and, yes, Hot For Teacher, I admit they're really f#@*ing good.
Who do you count as your 80s rock guitar gods/guilty pleasures? I'm focusing on 80s players due to their style of play.
2.
Who would you cast in Van Halen's biopic? I would choose:
Bassist Michael Anthony - Chris Pratt
David Lee Roth - Jimmy Fallon
Drummer Alex Van Halen - no idea
Guitar god (was recently named by Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame as) Eddie Van Halen - no idea
What do you all think? Also, feel free to laugh in my face.
