Ok, I let myself simmer for a couple of days to think about the inexcusable that happened on Saturday. That game should have been a 35-24 blowout of West Virginia. Never in a million years would I have thought we would have held down WVA to 17 points and LOSE.
The defense and special teams did their jobs (except for the last kick, but that's a lot of pressure and there was still a lot of time left on the clock).
On to the real problem, the offense.
Here's how I see it (key points):
1) Get rid of the pop pass as a main cog in the offense
2) Stop protecting Ertz
3) Run the F'n ball
4) Screen play anyone??
5) Bring in Delton (and Warmack)
We need to get rid of that dumb pop pass as part of our main offense. It is not working well anymore and it stunts our offensive line because they cannot go more than 1 yard up the field to block. So if for some reason we cannot throw the ball, the play gets blown up because our linemen couldn't keep pushing their blocks.
Ertz needs to be a 'real' part of the running game. The offensive play calls are currently protecting him so he only runs in scramble situations. Without the QB run game, out offense is not as potent as it can be.
This combines with the first 2. We need a QB that can run and we need to actually start running the football with authority. It looks to me our current blocking schemes are not drive off the ball types of blocks to try and move the DLine. It's more of a zone blocking scheme were we are not getting any push on the DLine. WVA had 3 down linemen... we should have been pushing them around all day long...
With all of the blitzing that WVA did, why didn't we have an option or a screen play that we could have checked into to try and neutralize it??
Finally, IF we are not going to use Ertz like we need to (running), then bring in Delton. Delton is faster then Ertz and will probably make up for the times he messes up with his athleticism. Also, I think delton could have went 10-30 against WVA. Also, the times that Warmack were in he made a difference.
FUK this game was so frustrating to watch.
