I know I know, Dimel is terrible.
But, I still don't understand how HCBS hasn't overridden him, and instituted a passing game our QBs can actually manage. For about a quarter against OU, we saw it. Play action, with quick passing, and dragging routes that are easy to complete.
We simply do not (Ertz included) have QBs that can drop back and make throws to long, out-breaking routes. Neither has the arm strength, and certainly not the accuracy.
I go back to what I saw TCU do with Boykin in his early years (that 2012 game against them down there comes to mind). They would utilize the power running game, then any pass was usually play-action, or they'd roll the pocket to take advantage of his running ability. I get that it cuts the field in half and can be easier to defend, but it also gives a QB that doesn't have drop-back skills, the ability to make an easier throw (or take off and run).
To watch either Ertz or Delton sit in the shotgun and try and sling it to moderately athletic receivers on long-developing routes is just painful. And it doesn't fit anyone on this offenses's skills.
