First let me get this out of the way -- I have a subscription to ESPN+ and have no problem with streaming. I still have my cable package and have not cut the cord, but probably will when I feel the time is right. So I am not at all whining about this new technology being forced on us. That is not what this is about.
I have never had a need to watch anything on ESPN3 before our UNLV game last Saturday. I had always seen ESPN3 games available on my ESPN app and understood that access to them was included with a subscription to ESPN and therefore assumed anyone who had signed in with their cable or satellite provider verifying their subscription could access them. I found out Saturday that is not the case. Even though ESPN3 is available to the end user at no additional cost beyond his subscription to ESPN, the provider must pay for it in order to be able to offer it to the end user. My cable provider has chosen not to pay the additional amount so when I tried to access the game Saturday I was told that I do not have a subscription to ESPN3. I am having a hard time making sense of this. Can anyone explain the rationale in telling the end user it is included at no additional cost, but then charging the provider an extra amount and not providing it to him if he does not pay for it? There appears to be a certain amount of false advertising there.
