For everyone buying a stock, there is someone selling the same stock. At that instant in time, neither person is right and neither is wrong, they simply made a decision based on the data they had and their gut.
Everyone on here is a passionate K-State fan. Even if a couple of us have an unusual way of expressing it.
Frank Martin,,, the effort, the swagger/attitude, and the success,,, he brought K-State basketball back and there is no denying that, he deserves the credit. No one has ever had a 6-year stretch like that. We all remember the excitement in Oklahoma City and then that magical night in Salt Lake City .
(In my lifetime, the most incredible games were # 1 Oregon St (Ro's buzzer beater), #2 Purdue (there were almost riots in the 'Ville), and #3 Xavier (never seen anything like it). And #3 was all Frank.)
But the reality is that Frank left. His ego didn't work with John Currie's plan. That was all on Currie and Frank. Neither one would compromise and one had to go.
Weber had nothing to do with Frank leaving… Weber is not Frank. And it doesn't matter which camp you are in, that isn't going to change.
So, 2015… Most look at this season as a complete failure. It was but I look at it more as a missed opportunity.
Did Okie St or Texas have a better year than us? We were all 8- 10 in conference, they just got one extra week before they went home.
6 out of Texas ' 8 conference wins were against TxTech, TCU, and K-State. So they only had 2 conference wins against tourney teams.
Okie St lost 7 of their last 8, got beat by SoCarolina by 26 points, and only beat Mizzou by 2 in OT, who ended the season 9-23. Not stellar.
K-State had wins against #16 OU, #22 Baylor, #17 OU, #8 KU, and #12 Iowa St. We've only had that many 'quality' wins a few times that I can recall. When we played hard and weren't distracted, we were pretty darn good. When we didn't, it was 50-shades of Pervis Pasco.
And then I think about what my expectations were before the season started.
DJ wasn't hurt.
Wesley was poised to take a huge step forward.
And Marcus had the opportunity to be all everything.
But DJ didn't play, Wesley spent the first half of the season spinning his wheels and regressed, and we all know what Marcus did but more importantly what he didn't do.
And with all of that, we still weren't that far away from making the damn tourney. Crazy! But if and buts were candy and nuts, blah blah blah.
We can all agree that this year was very disappointing.
We can all agree that Weber needs to do a much better job of getting players.
We can all agree that this season spiraled out of control and that is all on Weber. In hindsight, he should have pulled Marcus' chain early in the season and not even let him sit on the bench. But then we would have all wanted to fire Weber for throwing the season away. Hell of a catch 22. Regardless, Weber runs this team, not Marcus. Weber is responsible.
So what is the point of all this rambling…?
What did Lon Kruger do after Mitch graduated? 8-6 and 7- 7 in the Big 8 and 0- 2 in the NCAA tourney. He left us for greener pastures. (His conference record his last two years at Florida was 14-18 and at Illinois was 14-18.)
Dana Altman got us back to the dance and was named Big 8 coach of the year in 1993. Then we were all so pissed off that we helped him pack up in 1994 after a 20-win season and making the NIT final 4. I think most of us were glad to see him go because he wasn't Lon Kruger and he didn't recruit a Mitch Richmond. (He went on to build Creighton's program and helped them get into the Big East and is at Oregon now.)
Then we got 12-years of Asbury and Wooldridge. The darkest days of K-State basketball. But since we also had LHCBS, we were all magically/thankfully distracted.
Thank heaven for Bob Huggins & Frank Martin and for the administration giving them both a chance. They were both responsible for bringing us back. But in the end, Huggins left us and it was time for Frank to go. There was no scenario that would have ended up positive for K-State if Frank would have stayed.
So the point is, we should be careful what we wish for.
Bruce Weber:
Conference Regular Season Championship (2013)
Big 12 Coach of the Year (2013)
Most wins (27) by a first-year coach in program history (2013)
Most wins (47) in the first 2 years
Most conference wins (24) in the first 2 years
Really crappy year in 2015, lost control of his best player, and needs to find some late recruiting gems to fill the gaps in 2016
Bruce is not Frank Martin but he is our coach. He had a bad year but I'm not selling my stock yet.
