I watched the UTSA game again tonight and paid particular attention to who was lined up in the backfield. Not counting penalties we ran 67 offensive plays. Of these 67 plays: Silmon was the RB for 19 of them (28%), Jones for 17 (25%), Dimel for 12 (18%). Warmack for 10 (15%), Gronk for 8 (12%), and we went with 5 wide for one play(2%). I only counted snaps for Dimel and Gronk where they were either the only RB in the formation or they were the deep back. Charles Jones is being referred to as the "starter" but he has still never started a game at Kansas State. Freshman Winston Dimel has started the last two games (he was deep with Gronk in front against S. Dakota and he was the only back in the game on Saturday). Silmon and Jones were rotating series through the first half and the start of the 3rd quarter. He wasn't featured until the last series of the third quarter but he was in for three other series.
Silmon: 19 plays - 8 passes, 6 RB runs, 5 QB runs
Jones: 17 plays - 6 passes, 7 RB runs, 4 QB runs
Dimel: 12 plays - 2 passes, 8 RB runs, 2 QB runs
Gronk: 8 plays - 2 passes, 6 QB runs
5 wide: 1 play - 1 pass
Silmon was used in a much larger portion of the playbook this week and looks to be in a good position to keep getting a larger portion of the snaps.
Jones was pretty good in pass protection but had a poor day running the football.
Dimel had a couple of nice catches today. He was less than impressive in the red zone imo (inconsistent).
Gronk had a nice day of blocking. He has come a long way from where he was when he got here. He also came back in after the injury. I think he is fine and will be good to go this week.
Along with going 5 wide for one play at UTSA we also unveiled the diamond formation (OK St uses this quite a bit) in the first quarter with both full backs, Hubener, and Jones in the backfield.
