So as usual I was listening to College Sports on Sirius XM on my morning drive. I never did catch who was in for the first team today, but evidently some sports writer, who had proposed in a column that kids who have redshirted the season be allowed to play in the bowl game with no consequences to their eligibility clock. He started out talking about Nebraska and Tennessee and how both teams have so many injuries to key players that the game will be really different than if most everyone was healthy. And how short-handed certain teams are at a position or two.
I thought that was an interesting idea, but I would make one additional requirement: the only redshirts who can play are the ones at the same position as an injured starter. So if you have a safety that started at least 2 games, say, during the season, but then was injured and cannot play in the bowl, then you can put in a redshirt safety and it doesn't count against him. But that doesn't mean you can put in a redshirt cornerback or linebacker or whatever.
I also would not allow that substitution for players like McCaffrey (sp?) or Linwood who choose not to play the bowl to avoid injury. It has to be someone who is not medically cleared to play. And the school would have to make some sort of application to get the substitution approved prior to the game.
Thoughts?
