With no Chiefs game today I had some additional time so thought rewatch and give some thoughts.
Offense - you can’t say much with only 6 plays but on the 6 plays there was a missed block by Rivas (2 plays), Levenston (1 play) and Adler (1 play) and the other two plays just too much pressure. Watching Levenston - he plays to upright and I seeing why they tried OJ McDuffie
Defense - Secondary played relatively well considering they only had 3 days of practice under their belts together. McPherson made some pretty big hits early. I’d give them a A-/B+ for the quarter.
Linebacker play was up and down this quarter. The first td was on Hughes for not playing the underneath coverage correctly but it didn’t help on the same play Hubert and Duke ran into each other so zero pressure. Sullivan was okay but not great. He and Fletcher struggled defending the over the middle of the TE play. Green was nonexistent. I’d give them a C
Defensive tackles - I’m hoping Pickle can keep up his play and become the third DT - I like his hustle and his hands up. I’m not sure Drew Wiley left the field for a sub this quarter. The other DTs that played aren’t there yet. Because of the tip ball - B for the quarter.
Defensive ends - this is where the problem is. Some of this is coaching and some of this is player technique but they are running themselves out of plays and getting into their stances constantly late - particularly Hubert. When they are going after the qb, both ends would get too wide and left huge throwing and running lanes. I’ll comment more on this issue later but at the moment Hubert is hurting the team more than he is helping. There was a sack by Ganious but it was more of a coverage sack than anything he did.
Defensive play calling - The back 7 I agree with how they schemed everything. Keep the big plays to a minimum. I don’t blame OU for trying to challenge them early and we did a relatively good job with what they threw at us. The front 4 schematics were horrid this quarter particularly on 3rd and medium to long. Yes I understand inviting the run but alignments were not good. Overall I’d give a passing grade of a C (secondary calls B but front four calls D-)
