Remember when you learned that Santa Claus wasn't real?
You'd spent all those years believing how great he was, how benevolent he was. You looked at him with wide-eyed wonder, certain he could do no wrong. You hung on his promise that if you behaved, worked hard in school, listened to your elders, etc, you'd be rewarded. You scrambled to see him, flocking to whatever mall he appeared in. Santa ruled your world. This believe system served you well for many, many years.
Then some time passed. You started to question things. Stuff didn't add up anymore. So was it really "his way or the highway" with the naughty/nice list? Was Santa really this much of a control freak? It seemed like this method had worked forever so why change it, right? Yet you wondered. Had Santa really not adapted to the changing times? If I got into his doghouse, how did I get out? He never really told us the rules, we were just left to guess, speculate, and hope. So your doubt grew.
Then came the day when you full on no longer believed. You'd tried for a while to keep the myth alive but slowly cracks appeared in the facade. You wanted to believe. You wished mightily for those blinders that had served you so well years before, but alas, the rose colored glasses had been removed.
Suddenly you found yourself faced with reality. Cold, hard reality. Santa, though once a mighty figure in your life, had now faded and was exposed as just a fantasy you tried to keep alive all those years. You were now left trying to figure out how to move beyond this reality, trying to figure out what the future holds. Without Santa, would there still be a Christmas? Of course, you knew that Christmas would still come, but you had to ask yourself...would it still be as fun, would it still have the same magic, would it still be as wonderful, would the gifts be plentiful, would you still be happy?
Only the passing of time would & will answer those questions. But you knew one thing for certain...Santa was behind you and you were left staring out the window into an uncertain holiday season.
