Today, Chuck Schumer suggested a federal framework for states adopting sports betting. He thinks the leagues should have a say in what can be bet on. This, for obvious reasons, is a terrible idea. For years, the leagues opposed sports betting. Lobbied against it. Fought like crazy to keep the PASPA law in place until they figured out the best way to profit off it in the future. And then, almost out of nowhere, the Supreme Court overturned the ban.
Now the leagues want to have a seat at the table. They want to license their stats. They want to collect an integrity fee for oversight of their games. They want to help shape the laws. Umm, no. It shouldn't be entertained. The leagues had their chance for years—and they punted.
Schumer will come up with more bad ideas and look in all the wrong places instead of the obvious ones. For example, there should be limits on how much vig a sportsbook can charge. Sportsbooks also should not be allowed to ban winning players. They should have posted limits and adhere to them. And so on.
Will Schumer ruin sports betting?
