There are 200 minutes to allocate over the course of a basketball game. (5 positions X 40 mins). The number of minutes any one person on the team plays is dependent upon sets, rotations, foul trouble, depth and many other factors. I asked the KSO staff, how to allocate the minutes when they were seeking questions for the podcast. @Baller-Status commented in that thread that he wanted to answer, so here is his chance.
In the podcast @Matt Hall broke it down like this:
Dean Wade: 32
Barry Brown: 31
Kam Stokes: 30
Xavier Sneed: 30
Amaad Wainright: 17
Cartier Diarra: 15
Makol Mawien: 12
Mawdo Sallah: 10
Levi Stockard: 8
Nigel Shadd: 8
Brian Patrick: 5
Mike McGuirl: 2
It was a good effort, but I think he is overusing the starters and spreading the bench minutes around too much. I don't see four players averaging 30+ minutes or ten players averaging 8+ minutes.
Here is my take:
Barry Brown: 30
Dean Wade: 28 (The same as he had last year - it is hard for a big man to average much more than this due to exhaustion and foul trouble. The last big we had that averaged more than this was the Beaz)
Kam Stokes: 26
Xavier Sneed: 26
Amaad Wainright: 20
Cartier Diarra: 18
Makol Mawien: 16
Nigel Shadd: 14
Mawdo Sallah: 10
Brian Patrick: 5
Levi Stockard: 4
Our regular rotation will feature 9 players. Last season we had a 7.5 player rotation. We had 7 we trusted, and were forced to play an additional player in the post at times due to foul trouble and/or fatigue. This season I see a more frequent rotation at the 5, since we do not have a dominant starter like we did last season, and better quality depth at the guards that should allow Stokes and Brown to rest a little more inorder to stay fresh. I do not see a large drop off between Brown/Stokes and Diarra/Wainright, maybe it will become more evident once the regular season starts, but in the exhibition games I thought the subs were nearly as good (and at times better) as the starter.
Patrick, Stockard, McGuirl, and the Walkons will take the rest of the minutes, but will not be consistent rotation players. They will get minutes here and there if forced into action, they are needed for a specific situation, or the game is out of hand.
I did not allocate any minutes for Love, which could change if he gets healthy enough to contribute.
