This will probably get lengthy so I will break it up into separate posts to try to make it a little easier to read or pick out what you want to read. I know many don't like these long posts and that's okay.

Play Numbers by Quarter

The last couple of seasons I have looked at play numbers by down and distance, and I will do that later, but since K-State has gotten off to some slow starts offensively, I wanted to see if there are any patterns by quarter or by the series. This first chart shows number of running vs passing plays by quarter, yards per play, % of run vs pass plays, and the % of plays that were deemed successful. If there is anyone looking at these for the first time, the play is based on what play is called. For example, if a QB scrambles on a passing play, that still counts as a pass play for this purpose.

Probably to no one's surprise, K-State has the highest yards per play (YPP) and overall success % in the 3rd quarter at 7.5 and 44%. They also have a 50/50 run/pass split in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd quarter is their lowest yards per play when a running play is called at 3.7, but the success % of 37% is the 2nd highest for running plays behind the 4th quarter.

Again, not a surprise that the 1st quarter has the lowest YPP and success rate at 5.1 and 27%. K-State has a 54/46 run/pass split. The Wildcats are actually more run heavy in the 2nd quarter at 57%. All plays count so I normally don't like to do this, but Howard's 80 yard run in the 1st quarter make the YPP numbers look quite a bit better. If you take away that one play, the Wildcats are averaging 2.9 YPP on 1st quarter running plays.

The good news is K-State's success % on running plays has increased every quarter with a high of 42% in the 4th quarter. The % of running plays also goes down after from the 2nd to 3rd to 4th quarters. On the flip side K-State's lowest success % on passing plays comes in the 4th quarter at 24% and that is the quarter they have the highest % of passing plays at 53%.
