In light of some of the discussion tonight, I've been inspired to write this.
When I got the chance to do this again and work for KSO, the ONLY thing I had any concerns about was covering this basketball program. Not because I don't love K-State basketball and college basketball in general, I do. I played basketball in high school (didn't play football) and loved basketball first. So, I love covering basketball, but I knew this could be hard for me.
I'm well aware of the fan base's dislike for Bruce Weber. It's super, super clear. It's been a view held by many since he was hired at K-State for a variety of reasons and would not change regardless of the results. Some also gave Weber a fair shake and have been disappointed by the results, causing them to want to move on. And, some do support Weber and think he can be successful.
I knew this would be tough for me, because I'm not somebody who - as a journalist - is going to rabidly call for somebody to be fired. Honestly, I may never do it. I'll be critical of coaches and of programs, talk about some things I don't like and would do differently, but it's going to take a lot for me to vocally call for somebody to be fired.
I know (as silly as it may seem) that my words and opinion may influence some. Maybe it'll be like two people, but they still may matter. For me to jump right in and loudly call for somebody's firing - and possibly have even the smallest chance of that influencing that possibility - is going to take a lot.
I knew from day one that the way I'd cover this basketball program would bother some people, and I don't like that. I am, by nature, a people pleaser and want everybody to be happy. I don't like potentially upsetting some people by covering the program in a manner that seems to be straight-forward and not passionate about the direction of the program. I assure you I care about K-State basketball, and its future, very deeply. Even if it doesn't come through in the way I cover the program.
So, if I anger you, I assure you it's not on purpose.
The best thing for business for a site like this? A coaching search. By far. It would be easier for me to call for something that would lead to that and to talk in a way that will get me more likes on my posts and on Twitter, but it's just not who I am.
I'll share opinions for sure, they just may be too measured and, well, boring for some on occassion
