Look no further than Jim Woolridge.
Jim Woolridge got a sixth year at K-State (Wefald made Weiser give Wooly a 6th year).
Had Woolridge not been given a 6th year, there would have been NO Bob Huggins or Frank Martin/ Dalonte Hill.
Jim Woolridge in 6 years, never got K-State to the NIT, little lone the NCAA tourney.
Woolridge's best season was year five = 17 & 12 (6 & 10 in the Big 12).
Woolridge's best conference record in 6 years at K-State = 6 & 10 (4 times).
Next year, Weber will need to do more than sneak in the NCAA tourney as a 11 or 10 seed and lose in the round of 64 (IMO). And Bruce has to do more next season without DJ and Iwundu.
If Weber is half as bad as some on here believe him to be, you don't have to worry about Weber getting the CATS back to the NCAA tourney and advancing (Time will tell).
For the purpose of this post, lets assume K-State does not make it back to the big dance and next March, Weber is fired.
Just maybe there will be a much better candidate next March that has an interest in coaching at K-State (a much better candidate, who may be currently available).
Okie State, California, & Washington went with an assistant coach (the Pokes & Bears hired an assistant from their outgoing coach). Were these schools lazy and/or saving money -OR- is the candidate pool really weak right now.
Okie State doesn't seem like a school that needs to save money.
Georgetown is looking for a new coach.
Not that K-State would have trouble competing with smallers schools, but UMass, Dayton, GW, and others have openings.
Had K-State fired Weber, some prospective coaches might question the firing = Weber got K-State back to the NCAA tourney after a 2 year absence and he's fired (gee whiz).
This time next year, K-State will have had another year to evaluate former K-Staters = Jankovich & Henson.
Henson is the coach for the University of Texas SanAntonio (UTSA).
In his first year as coach, Henson improved UTSA's record from 5 & 27 (3 & 15) to 14 & 19 (7 & 11).
As for next season, I will continue to cheer for the CATS... who knows, maybe Weber & the CATS will be a pleasant surprise (or NOT).
Side Note: did you know that Greg Marshall is the 9th highest paid college basketball coach... Bob Huggins at #6, makes about $200K more per year than Marshall... now I know why Marshall has stayed at Wichita State, I had no idea.
GO STATE !
