Almost won the Big 8 football title.

The Cats started the season 4-1 with an emotional win against KU in Manhattan. The following game was against Nebraska in Lincoln.

Going into the 4th quarter K-State was ahead 31-24. Early in the 4th quarter K-State had the ball at the Nebraska 16 yard line, 3rd and 2. Eric Gallon took the hand off from Paul Watson. Gallon had a crease, but lost his footing gaining 1 yard. Tate Wright came on the field for a 32 yard field goal attempt. Wright kicked the ball above the left upright. Everyone in the end zone thought the kick was good, but the 2 that counted, the officials.

Missing the field goal gave Nebraska new life. The Cornhuskers scored touchdowns with 6:49 and 2:37 remaining to take a 38-31 lead. K-State marched from their 21 to the Nebraska 7 in 5 plays before 3 passes fell incomplete to end the game. The final score was Nebraska 38 Kansas State 31.

The next week K-State played Colorado in Manhattan. Colorado scored their lone touchdown on a 13-yard scoring drive in the 2nd quarter. The Buffalos added a field goal in the 3rd quarter.

K-State penetrated the Colorado 20-yard line 4 times and scored no points. K-State's drives ended with 2 interceptions in the CU end zone and 2 missed field goals. K-State would have won the game if they would have scored any points on the 4 drives. The final score was Colorado 10 Kansas State 0.

If K-State won those 2 games they would have ended the Big 8 season in first place with a 6-1 record. Nebraska and Colorado would have tied for 2nd place with 5-1-1 records. OU would have finished in 4th place with a 5-2 record.
