In 1978, the NY Giants blew a game with almost no time left on the clock. Raised in
Connecticut, I have always been a Giants fan. Here's the story:
"On Nov. 19, 1978, the Giants were trying to protect a 17-12 lead over the Eagles by running out the clock. The victory formation wasn’t yet invented but quarterbacks typically fell to the ground in those situations. Joe Pisarcik did that once but when Eagles LB Frank LeMaster burst through and made contact, offensive coordinator Bob Gibson next called a running play with Larry Csonka. Gibson called it again on third down. Pisarcik was afraid to change the play, the handoff was botched and Herm Edwards scooped off the gift fumble and ran it in for the winning touchdown."
Today, I got my pay back for that loss. I have never, EVER seen anything quite like this game.
When we turned the ball over on downs, I said goodbye to my neighbor and we started walking down from row 15 on the east side. At the bottom, just as we turned the corner, the Cats turned the ball over and we watched in amazement as Hubener threw a lovely 40 yard pass and we were shortly tied......But, could they come back? Heck for the entire first half, they had gone through us like a hot knife through butter.........or OVERTIME? What the heck chance would we have in overtime? But, no.........A fumble. Run one play to center the ball and Jack Cantele got his payback for the investment of blown kicks last year.
Fun football is not always good football. This was FUN football. How does it get any better than to go into half time 3 touchdowns down and win it with near zero time on the clock. 8 fumbles? Good LORD. Let' take care of business in Lawrence next week and get our bowl game against West Virginia.
