Full disclaimer, I am not an nfl expert, just a fan. This is long and likely boring to most. These are my random thoughts on what the Chiefs should do over the next month to position themselves for a strong future.
The Chiefs are the Super Bowl Champs and have a lot of high dollar extremely talented guys which dominate the payroll in key positions and that will become even more true with a Mahomes extension.
I truly love Chris Jones and what he has done for this team and believe in his talent - he is worth every penny he gets but we simply can’t afford two $100 million guys on the D line at the expense of the rest of the roster.
I also believe there is more talent in the first three rounds of this draft than there has been a quite some time. If that is true you should leverage that to get younger and get a more affordable roster that is built for the long run.
Right now we are looking at five draft picks rounds one through five - primarily picking towards the back end of each round.
I would propose two actions - trade the 32nd pick in the first round and trade Chris Jones for picks.
In that scenario, the Chiefs would get a boatload of draft capital, primarily in the top 100.
I am doing this on a phone on the couch with notes on a post-it note, so i may have mistakes . I am also going from memory on some of my info which is probably not a great idea. Hopefully the site I just hit on draft picks positions was accurate.
The Chiefs have picks 32, 63, 96, 138, and 177 as it stands.
Deforest Buckner was traded for a #15 pick I believe. I think Chris Jones is worth every bit he is. Let’s assume Chris Jones is worth the composite value of the 20th pick.
According to most pick value charts that would make him worth 850 pts. Looking at the draft chart Carolina has the 38th, 69th, and 113th picks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds which would total a little less than 850. That 38th pick is likely to land a near equivalent talent wise to the 32nd pick
bit you dont get the 5th year option.
Now look at trading 32nd pick to move back in the draft. That pick is worth 590. That value would roughly be equivalent to Dallas’ picks at 51,, 82, and 179.
These two moves would put the Chiefs in the position to move from 5 draft picks to 9 with 6 picks in the top 100 while cutting payroll, getting younger, and providing depth.
So consider moving from 5 draft picks to 9. Getting a more sustainable cap position.
Trading Chris Jones and picks 32, 63, 96, 138, and 177 for ....
Picks 38, 51, 63, 69, 82, 96, 113, 138, 177, 179.
Now I realize that trades are rarely all draft picks and seldom as ideal as what I proposed. But it usually comes out in the wash. Instead of three picks you get a high value 26 y.o. guard or linebacker and two picks. That scenario still strengthens the roster.
This is the kind of draft position lineup that i grew sick of watching new england have year after year.
Think of the options. CB, LB, C/OG, Edge, OT, TE, S, CB, Other/Flex. The roster could be greatly improved for consistent runs at a Championship in 2-5 year window. I would give up a Superbowl run next year to have a roster that gives you a shot at the next 3 to 4 superbowls with a franchise quarterback and the rest of the pieces needed to sustain success.
