QB’s – I was actually impressed with the way Delton threw the ball, at least the shorter to intermediate passes. He did wait too long to throw the long passes, which caused the DB to be able to catch up to the WR & intercept it. Honestly, I think that if the coaches treat him the way they did Ell in 2002 (quick short passes) then he’ll be ok. I was impressed with the way that Thompson threw the ball as well. He puts the ball in a spot where only the WR can catch the ball. He & Sutton were really on the same page. Sutton caught several balls from Thompson.
RB’s – Damn, Barnes is a beast!! You can tell that he’s been lifting in the off season, because he’s bigger than last year without losing a step. He made a dive towards the end zone (going south) where he just barely didn’t get in. McCoy is a load!! If he runs more north & south, then he’ll be good. I’m not sure he’s quick enough (yet) to be able to make the corner. Silmon is what he always is – steady, durable & reliable.
WR’s – I thought Sutton looked good. He had quick crisp cuts & was working against Shelley most of the time. No one really stood out, but nobody was really bad either.
Oline – This is a hard to grade position, because if the QB is touched then he is considered “down”. But nobody really got beat a lot, so I was satisfied with their play.
Dline – I wasn’t able to watch them too much because my daughter sat us right up front & I didn’t have a good line of sight to watch the line of scrimmage. But there isn’t any stunting, so it’s hard to tell anyway.
LB’s – I thought Tanking played well. He made a couple of stand up tackles where he met the RB at the line of scrimmage & the RB couldn’t get away from him.
DB’s – At first I was really disappointed at how the CB’s were playing. It seemed like the WR’s were getting open at will. But then I watched how hard they were actually playing & it was obvious that neither Shelley nor Reed were going 100% & I don’t blame them. They have their positions locked up & they were just trying to get thru the practice without getting injured.
Overall, the game is what it always is – bland, boring & very vanilla. But it’s always exciting to be able to sit in the Bill & watch KSU football. You could definitely tell that the injury bug hit KSU as there were a bunch of players that weren’t even suited up.
