I thought someone brought up an interesting point last night that didn't get discussed much. It's no secret that we are usually fairly vanilla the first game but that is usually discussed in the context of the play calling.
Someone mentioned last night that he thought our blocking schemes were pretty vanilla last night. Dimel, as well as opposing coaches, most notably the Stoops brothers, talk a lot about how complicated our run game is and I agree with them. We create a lot of creases with our splits, and getting good angles with pulling different guys. Heck there are times in the zone read the defensive tackle is the guy we don't block. That is not something you see from a lot of teams.
Obviously we would all love to see us be able to line up and dominate a team like UCA at the line of scrimmage, but when you combine our simplicity with the schemes with the number of people UCA had in the box, it did make it more difficult to run.
