When he left (or was let go) there was rumors that he was feeding information to John Currie. This never made sense to me as the end game was never really apparent, but if he was promised a spot on Jim Leavitt's staff it would make perfect sense.
As for leaking the news now, according to twitter, he still lives in Manhattan so perhaps he still views a spot on Jim Leavitt's staff as a possibility.
This theory checks off a lot of boxes in my mind, the timeline matches up well with him having knowledge of the deal, he has motivation to paint Snyder in a bad light considering he fired him, considering how he went out and continues to not have a job he doesn't have a whole lot to lose, and he could potentially have a job lined up if this were to happen.
