Is it Bill and the staff? Or is it the players decision? I remember discussing this at length with many who claim that Bill leaves it up to the player to decide? Does he? The answer is yes, he does, but thanks to Banks, he proves my point in that only in that they get to choose whether they want to or not in stating thier opinion, but ultimately, Bill decides, because Bill has the power to decide.
Go ahead and choose not to red shirt and you just simply don't play. That is how it is. Did Banks want to red shirt? Obviously he and his father felt that he was good enough to play for K-State. Which they would have chosen not to red shirt if given the option to decide, but they weren't. He was forced to red shirt because if not, he just simply would not have played, as was obviously the case. I think this is the root cause of situations like this, where players come in and you give them the option to red shirt, but it does't matter what they want, they will either red shirt or not based on what the coaches decide. That's like saying, it's your decision as to whether or not you start, but you can say yes, I want to start a million times, but in no way are you gonna start unless the coaches decide to start you.
It's the whole, wish in one hand. $&@! In the other and see which one fill up faster. I guarantee you the one that sybolizes all those players that said no to a red shirt, yet they still redshirted fills up faster.
