Why is the "Cardinal" singular?

That would be like "the Sooner, the Longhorn, the Jayhawk, the Tiger" etc. singular just sounds odd to me.
Lastly, I am tired of the Geico Marco Polo tv ad. I mute it. On a positive note I love the feel of fall today. Mid 50s outside in Man. Game day. Good stuff
