Isn’t THAT good. I’m so tired of hearing about how good their defense is. WVU’s defense isn’t anything special and they give up real yards and real points to pretty mediocre teams on a regular basis.
They’ve beaten us 5 times in a row because we don’t have true balance. A lot of teams in the BigXII run odd-stack and bring exotic blitzes, especially when they play us. That’s not unique to WVU. Their personnel aren’t anything special. I do think they play/execute that style of base defense better than say a Tech, oSu, or Texas because that’s their system, not just something they saw on film and are throwing at us for a game.
There’s 2 ways to beat it. A dominate offensive line with a power back, an attack that shoves the ball directly at them. They can run every backside blitz they want, we’re already 5 yards into their second layer by that point. That’s not us. The other method is to actually having a consistent passing game and a quarterback that can make his reads and see his outlets. Guys wide open all over the field when they bring that much heat. WVUs aggressive defensible philosophy absolutely destroys slow decision makers like Sky or a green QB like Big Bill Howard.
I don’t mind Kli/Mess approach to offensive football but we really need a legitimate, consistent, passing game at some point. Not necessarily Air Raid but some real balance , EVERY game. We aren’t the NDSU of this level where we can just run people over.
