It is January of 2022 and the Big 12 remains alive and doing pretty well.

2022 is ready to go as normal.

2023 gets Wild. BYU seems certain to be in. Texas and OU seem very likely to be staying as they still havent given 18 months notice of 2023 departure. Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF want to play Big 12 in 2023 but it isn't a certainty at this point.

I think if OU, Texas, and TV plays nice we could see a 14 team conference in 2023 and 2024.

Scenario 1 (I think most likely)

2023 BYU joins and Big 12 plays a 10 game conference season. Pros are that it prevents arguments over divisions and BYU could easily upgrade or replace the nonconference games.

Drawbacks are that some non conference games would be bought out and Houston, Cincinatti, and UCF are impatiently waiting.

Scenario 2 (Dennis Dodds guess)

14 teams in 2 divisions in 2023.
He is thinking remain at 9 conference games. That would mean 6 divisional games and 3 from the other division.

South
Texas
Tech
Baylor
TCU
Houston
UCF
West Virginia

North
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Kansas State
Kansas
Iowa State
Cincinnati
BYU

Pros
AAC teams get in quickly like they want to. Big 12 Championship might not be a rematch. TV would have more Big 12 games to televise each week.

Cons
Fights over division membership. Also fights over who to play in the other division. Keep in mind there is no way to really make it fair. Kansas State would not play 4 teams from the other division in 2023. They could switch 3 others in 2024 but would still miss playing 1 of the teams.

AAC buyouts?
