Shout-outs
  • Tee Denson. Without seeing snap counts you'd have never know he played that much. He quietly did his job most of the game
  • Marvin Martin and RJ Garcia for earning meaningful minutes just 1 year removed from HS
  • Hadley Panzer for getting his feet wet in his first full year with the program
Observations
Q1
The red zone swing pass to Jax exposed KUs backside coverage when Thompson rolled away from the play action fake to Ervin. Nobody went with Ervin. Mess saw it and used a very similar action with a rollout to the right side of the formation on the wide open PA pass to Deuce.

#63 got beat by KU NG on 1st play of our 2nd drive. There's that leakage amongst the right 3 Olineman that @ksu_FAN talked about. There's another on a sweep I'll cover later.

On the Knowles bomb our 6 blockers (+Beh Beh stayed in and did a great job) absolutely stonewalled the 4 man rush. They allowed zero push

Garcia was in by the 2nd drive. Those weren't token snaps at all. He played with the starters. Probably gonna see him sit out one more game to preserve the redshirt and play quite a bit otherwise.

Stubblefield is really effective as a run blitzer off the edge. He ran down Neal from the backside. What a stud

Q2
Bean's first down scramble on 3rd and 8, Trussell did a nice job beating the tackle around the edge, then he got redirected by a tackle tugging on his shoulder pad from behind. That's a hold 10 out of 10 times. Green's angle stunk, not allowing for Bean's speed.

Austin Moore really shoots the gap. He gets into the backfield more than Fletcher. Seems like a quick read/react player who gets the most out of his body. Classic KSU try-hard LB

IMO the quick pitch power enthusiasm is over-rated. The effectiveness of the action had a lot to do with the defense and it worked less and less as the game wore on.

With Beebe at RG Mess was pulling him and it looked awfully good

Duffie gave up a QB pressure to a KU D-end. Yuck

Q3
Beebe's hook block to set the edge on the 80 yd TD was so elite. The DEnd was a full yard outside him. For comparison we ran the same action a few plays later and Duffie couldn't. KU's #3 was so painfully slow in pursuit of Deuce on the long TD. That poor kid belongs at Pitt State or FHSU.

Ervin is a great doubles hitter (credit @scottwildcat ) that is better vision away from being a triples threat. At the 12:15 mark he had a nice running lane around the left side and then ran DB being effectively blocked by Howell. A cut back inside and the 10 yard pickup turns into 20+

10:05 Thompson's over-throw of Deuce was so bad. Either throw it on him or put a little air under it bub. Deuce could have stopped and stood still to catch it no problem. This was the play Mess saw open in Q1. It worked again. KU isn't good at football.

10:00 Tried getting the edge with Ervin on a similar concept to what Deuce scored on (pull the center, hook the DE with OT and sweep toward the HBack side). DE #99 not only got penetration and refused to get hooked by Duffie, he then collapsed back in for the tackle. Duffie got owned. 80 yard TD run when we went left and 2 yard gain going right. Furthers the OLine imbalance narrative

8:35 high incompletion to Wheeler in the endzone wasn't a great throw, but it was possibly the wrong read. Bhe Bhe came wide open after stemming his route out and Skylar had no pressure on him. If Sky felt he needed to throw it that high due to the defender then going to his second read would have been better.

Timmy Horne got 2 yards deep into the backfield on 2nd and 2 with 2:12 to go. didn't make the play. He seems disruptive but not a great finisher.

Felix's push pull move on the strip sack was so, so elite.

I was glad to see us try to do something with 30 seconds to go and good field position right before half. That's un-Klieman-esque, but a 3 yard crosser to a TE???? That's a frustratingly-token attempt. best case we gain 5 yards and he goes out of bounds.

Yeast struggled with coverage throughout the day. His worst game in a while.

3Q run game wasn't reliable. Mess didn't seem to trust it like he did in first half

Really wanted to see Garber catch that deep bomb. He did his part on the deep post but Sky's errant quarter of throwing undid it.

Q4
Elder got fooled by Neal. Left Ross on his knees grading air. Neal's good. Maybe Breece Hall good. Ross has been better, as whiff's like that have become rare

Good to see Marvin Martin getting reps. Gonna need that fella next year.

I don't understand the blocking below the waste rule. The call on Sinnot at 4:30 looked almost like the same block Wheeler had on Potter that was highlighted as a good block earlier.

Howard looks comfortable with catch the snap and throw. Not so much when he's asked to make reads. His feet look awful on the drop back at 4:05. He completed it to Garber but his back foot was dancing (almost twitching) like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Garbage time Oline: LT Long, LG Leveston C Gillum RG Panzer RT Duffie

On the Howard scramble that was called back for a hold on Long, Leveston and Gillum didn't handle the looping LB blitz. Gillum stayed attached to the nose and didn't pick up the looping LB who started in front of KT and then looped around the NG. However, KT didn't have the right depth for Gillum to hand off the nose. KT was stranded in no mans land and blocked nobody. No bueno

On the 3rd and 16 pass Howard's feet were less jumpy but it also looked like he didn't go through any progressions. His helmet never moved. I think he was going to Garcia no matter what. Not a great sign.

Hunter Henry was playing CB opposite Tee in garbage time. Man we're lucky we've not been bit with injury. there isn't much beyond the top 4.

On the waved off PI on Tee, I don't see how the announcers missed the fact the WR slipped as he tried to stop. Tee didn't stop him, he stopped himself. That said it probably should have been flagged for the contact regardless.

On KUs 4th and 9 turnover on downs it was great to see TJ win in coverage. He did great. Trussell also showed great burst beating the tackle easily around the edge. He's got good get-off

On the last drive Oline was LT KT, LG Delforge, Gillum, RG Panzer, RT Long. It's disappointing that the only young guy getting reps is Panzer. Didn't learn anything for the future. Bummed we haven't seen any of Leingang, Willis, Ugwu or Mitchum.
