My daughter's school district (and also beloved alum Skylar Thompson's school district) Fort Osage nestled in a pasture between Buckner, MO and Independence, MO just purchased this business which was closed recently to start an Entrepreneurial Studies Program as part of the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center. It will serve not only Fort Osage School District, but also Blue Springs, Oak Grove, and Grain Valley. They will explore entrepreneurship with a fully student run business. Students will learn about store operations, customer service, marketing, and inventory management under the direction of the CTC instructor and the Fort Osage Food Services Manager. They are going to pull in the marketing department already part of the Career and Tech Center, and they are looking at starting a culinary arts program as well. The entrepreneur students, made up of upperclassmen at the participating districts will begin class when school starts up in August. Tentatively they plan to open the coffee shop in October 2021. Once open the business will serve coffee and food and I believe also some retail. Fort Osage purchased the building, so it's not immediately clear how participation with Blue Springs (a much larger district) as well as Oak Grove and Grain Valley will be worked in and how it's going to be paid for . But it's a pretty cool step that is part of Fort Osage's Real World Learning initiative to get more and more graduates ready for post secondary learning, work, financial planning, and real life.
