Basketball Weber presser notes

  • DaJuan Gordon avoided a fracture. Gordon wants to be back out there right away but they are going to play it safe and wait till the trainer says it is good to go.

  • Weber says they will miss DJG because of he is so good on the play hard chart and doing the little things.

  • He said they had a chance to win the game versus A&M. Said it was a tough loss, tough one for the guys. He did see some progress but he wants to see more even though they have a setback without DJG.

  • Coach says that KU has had some shooting woes this year. He said they have to stay in front of them. Garrett is good at getting to the paint and they have started to throw it inside to McCormick. Said they have to be prepared for when they try to feed the post to get a quick hitter. He expects a zone will be used against them in some different variations like the triangle and two as well as box and one. Both teams need a win.

  • Selton will be back in the starting lineup with DJG out. Coach says that KState can't play big against KU since they usually play small, but if the Jayhawks do decide to go big they will counter. He mentioned Antonio and Luke will both see more time with DJG out. Coach said that the Wildcats have to step up and make the deep balls.

  • Coach admitted that playing big against A&M was a mistake especially when the Aggies were playing small-ball as they took advantage of the Wildcats in those positions and could have been the difference of the game.

  • In one shooting drill Nijel Pack made 80 of 100 from 3 recently. They talk with him a lot about footwork, using his legs, and the follow through. He had a special night on Saturday, wishes they could have gotten the win with how good he was individually.

  • They put a lot of time in with shooting even though it hasn't shown. Weber thinks they are better shooters than they have shown. He thinks some of it is confidence in Rudi and Selton and to a degree Luke, but says part of Luke's troubles shooting just has to do with experience and the more he is out there the more comfortable he will get. The same could be said for Rudi and Selton. They have had more experience playing this year but still this is their first year at this level.

  • Coach said Carlton was on a radio show recently and he mentioned that last year he watched K-State games and thought to himself that he for sure can play with these guys. But then he got here and he realized there is still so much more to learn to be successful at this level.

  • Coach says that KU has struggled to shoot this season. Struggled even more when they hit conference play. Coach says that KU usually has one or two guards that can really command an offense and they miss some of that this year. He says they have some good young guards coming up but they just aren't ready to be the primary ball handler for the Jayhawks yet. Coach says they've had a little dip recently but he expect they will have a good finish to the season.

  • Coach responded to a question about Gene Taylor discussing his job status this weekend with, "I'll be honest, I don't even know if he did or not."

  • Coach says he was happy and he was sad about the loss to A&M. Says they have gone through so much and they played tough and played with good injury and battled. Said that is all they can ask for. He added that it was so good for Nijel. They put a lot of pressure on him something coach wanted to avoid since he was just getting back. There were sometimes he was tired and they had to use timeouts to rest him but overall was a really good game for him.

  • Weber said he watched the game versus KU at Allen Field House from last year and it reminded him that he has to make sure he talks to the team about how unacceptable what happened was.
