No. 17 Kansas State Wildcats

Best case: A Big 12 title repeat. The Wildcats face plenty of potential toss-up games -- home games against TCU and a potentially resurgent Baylor, road trips to Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas (and rival Kansas???) -- but they might only be a true underdog once, at Texas. If their remodeled receiving corps and secondary hold up and they find some of the same late-game magic that drove them win three of four one-score finishes last year, they have a clear path to another Big 12 championship appearance. And if you can make it to the big game, you can win it. They probably have too many toss-ups to win them all and reach the CFP, but an 11-2 season and title repeat are on the table.

Worst case: It's really hard to win most or all of your close games for two straight years. If said receiver and secondary turnover flips the big-play battle in favor of KSU opponents, it could also flip quite a few games. In the Big 12, you're constantly playing in tight contests, and if most or all of them go against the Wildcats, a floor of 6-6 or so -- the same regular-season record that last year's defending Big 12 champion (Baylor) suffered -- is a possibility. -- Bill Connelly

Future Big 12 projection, sans Texas & OK, from Arizona Republic

3. Kansas State (10-4, 7-2 in Big 12)

The Wildcats beat TCU in the Big 12 Championship Game last season and could be right back there this season. The team also picked up some valuable experience in its loss to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

More: Who is in the Big 12? And why are Pac-12 schools leaving for it? Your questions answered

2. Utah (10-4, 7-2 in Pac-12)

The Utes won the Pac-12 Championship last season and it isn't that far-fetched to see them winning it again this season. Kyle Whittingham has built a program that could be a very good fit in the Big 12.

1. TCU (13-2 overall, 9-0 in Big 12)

Are we too high on the Horned Frogs? Possibly. But they made the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship Game and that earns them the No. 1 spot in our book, no matter who they may have lost.

The Cats in 2023-From ESPN

No. 16 Kansas State Wildcats

2022 record: 10-4

What we'll learn about Kansas State in September: Does this offense still have the playmakers? Deuce Vaughn and his 1,936 yards from scrimmage are gone. So is Malik Knowles (725 receiving yards, 15.1 per catch). No. 3 receiver Kade Warner had some big moments; he's gone, too. K-State brings a lot to the table after last year's Big 12 title run -- quarterback Will Howard, the Big 12's most proven offensive line, a ridiculously reliable linebacker duo in Austin Moore and Daniel Green -- but while the defense has some transition to work through on the line and (especially) in the secondary, the Wildcats will be fine as long as they're making as many big plays as they're allowing. They should have what they need at running back, where sophomore DJ Giddens (5.8 yards per carry) and Florida State transfer Treshaun Ward (6.6) have flashed exciting explosiveness. But slot man Phillip Brooks is the only wide receiver who caught more than seven balls last year. K-State has to find some new weapons for Howard if the Wildcats are going to survive a trip to Missouri and tricky home games against Troy and UCF unbeaten. -- Bill Connelly

Duffie: Snippet from KC Star

“I think Duffie will be (ready) early into the season,” Klieman said during a news conference on Tuesday. “We’re holding him out for something that happened to him in the summer. But I don’t think it’s long term. We will find out a little bit more probably in the next couple weeks about his availability. We don’t believe it to be a long-term deal, but we’re going to be really cautious

Football Recruiting Unearthing visitors for football barbecue on Thursday

Michael Boganowski and Grant Brix are both expected to be in attendance, as well as 2025 target from Goodland Linkon Cure.

Boganowski was supposed to visit KU today but ended up not making the trip, per our Rivals KU site JayhawkSlant. Boganowski is visiting Oklahoma on the 28th (Friday), I would assume Brix would make that trip as well.
