Offense
- Silmon's TD had a blitzing secondary member leave a big hole but worked out well
- Silmon lined up wrong or something on the next series and Hubener did all he could with minimal gain
- How does a fullback like Dimel get that wide open on a 30 yd route. Wow!
- Rotating a lot of wide receivers in and out of the lineup now. Reuters and Davis in
- I love Dimel's push when he carries the ball
- Coach is going to come unglued with all the false starts this game.
- Glad Warmack get reps with the ones.
- Aaron Bennett is in for Kleinsorge playing with the 1s. Wondering if Kleinsorge still isn't healthy?
- Warmack impressive when he is given the chance.
- Delton more impressive running the zone read than Hubener. Selfishly, I wanted to see Delton throw at least one pass.
Defense
- Tried to bring Starks on a surprise blitz but was caught off guard on a jet sweep
- Fake punt ended the game. All morale left UTSA after that.
- d line still has a ton of push for being this late in the 4th quarter. I love watching Geary suplex the wide receiver!
- McDaniel gets called for pass interference. Never even turns his head.
- 1st play in the game and Adams makes a good read and runs up for the tackle.
- I'd say it's safe to say Reggie Walker and Duke Shelley are red-shirting unless injuries make us play them. Two straight games without them. Surprised me as much as we were hearing about Walker from the GPC team.
- I'm amazed we don't see more of Seiwart. Whenever he is in he makes plays.
Overall thoughts -
This was definitely a game of two halves. The first half was all about UTSA's mistakes and derailing their own momentum. The offensive play-calling was a huge issue the first half - whether it was the coaches or Hubener audibling out of certain plays. Defense was serviceable the first half but again more about what UTSA messed up. 2nd half the defense got in UTSA's head and the offense found some success with down the field throws and unleashing Silmon.
Defense - I see it being serviceable most of the year. I saw good progression out of Will Davis and Elijah Lee today, Kaleb Prewett had a decent game, and defensive tackles were solid. The DEs need some work but I think they will be okay.
Special Teams - Walsh didn't have his best game but I didn't think it was as horrible as the commentators described it. Burns is quickly turning into the next big return man and grateful Cantele was successful.
Offense - Here in lies the concerns. Very up and down performance. For every 1-2 good plays there were many, many mistakes. The biggest strength on offense right now are the fullbacks. They do a little bit of everything.
Wide Receivers - up and down game with a lot of rotation here which I think is a good think. Find out which players are going to step up and make plays or others will find there way to the bench.
QB - Hubener was serviceable but has to work on the short routes. Much has been said about his body language which I acknowledge needs to change. He is the leader of the team and needs to be fiery yes but moping about dropped balls, wrong routes, or holding penalties changes nothing. Talk to the guys on the sidelines or something like that but move onto the next play and go.
Running backs - If Charles Jones is still starting running back by the start of Big 12 play then that's on the coaches. Based off of what I saw yesterday our blocking scheme is not setup to take advantage of his abilities, he dances, and his vision is not good. Silmon and Warmack need to be on the field and fed the ball.
Offensive Line - While the offense is going to struggle I think what's the most upsetting is the lack of progress on the offensive line. Luke Hayes was my whipping boy last year on here and looking like he will continue to be. He is by far the weakest link on that chain. With 4 seniors starting on the line it should be our biggest strength. Probably my biggest frustration lies at this position. I think it demonstrates how often we have whiffed on recruiting, misdiagnosing talent, and poor execution of a blocking scheme. (Same scheme for the last 5 years and the last three years we haven't been very good.) Whitehair is NFL material but playing out of position, I see promise in Risener but he is young. Again with every 1-2 good plays with this group, I saw 2-3 bad plays right after.
Play Calling - Perhaps it was due to defensive alignments but I was truly stunned by our 1st half calls. Much of what was done caused the struggles on offense - hence the low score but changes were made at half and I thought improvements on calls were evident and yielded much better results.
Until next time my friends. EMAW
