The offense really only had 9 series in this game thanks to the Pick 6 and the KO return.
Series 1: Established the game plan - give Jones the ball until they prove they can stop him. Crucial 3rd & 5 conversion. It worked, but it looked ugly. Nice TD pass to Zuber with the stretch.
Series 2: Good Balance moves the ball down the field. Ertz had a huge scramble on 3rd and 14 to keep the chains moving. We failed in the red zone, AGAIN. 2nd & 3 from the TTU 4, run the ball three times if you have to! We ran on them all night. Jones & Ertz averaged over 7 yards per carry for the game. Our sequence: Rush Dimel 1 yrd, Incomplete pass, Settle for FG.
Series 3: Ertz looked very sharp on this drive. 21 yard carry and 3-3 passing. The typical KSU QB sneak on the 1 pushes the ball across for the TD.
Series 4: Take a knee and go into half with a lead.
Series 5: Three and Out. Jones stuffed. Incomplete. Ertz checked down to Jones on 3rd down short of the chains.
Series 6: Two nice designed QB runs to start the drive. Each gain 14 yards. Followed by Incomplete, Incomplete, Holding, Incomplete. The holding play negated a 22 yard first down run by Ertz.
Series 7: Three and Out. 3rd & 4 and another incompletion. Our passing game was brutal in the 3rd Quarter: 1-6, 6 yards
Series 8: Reestablish Charles Jones. 4 Jones carry to start the drive (21 yards). Huge 3rd down completion to Heath (Great Catch) to keep the chains moving. Two Red Zone carries for Jones = 15 yards and a TD.
Series 9: 12 play drive takes 6:36 off the clock and results in points. Wish it would have been a TD. Ride Charles Jones down the field. 4 carries for 40 yards. Red Zone struggles continue. First and goal from the 7. Two Warmack carries for 4 yards, a false start (clock running down PANIC) and an incompletion result in a FG.
Series 10: Received the ball off of downs from TTU inside FG range. We were very conservative. One Jones Carry and two QB plunges. Delay of game on getting the FG unit out. WTF? Doesn't matter McCrane hit the 42 yarder (Nice!).
We settled for FGs way too often again this week. We have not been very good around the end zone. That is my biggest concern. Passing game was brutal in 3rd quarter but otherwise decent. Charles Jones had a very nice game. Ertz had several nice runs. A couple of penalties hurt us in KEY situations. Not a bad day, but still plenty to work on.
