So I take my dog to a fenced public dog park 2 to 3 times a week as my wife and I's yard is not fenced and my dog loves to play fetch. Last Sunday my dog and I were at the dog park and my dog was sitting in the shade about 20 yards away from when this woman came through the gate with her 2 greyhounds. As she and her dogs came through the gate, her 2 dogs sprinted right towards my dog. When her dogs got near my dog, my dog got spooked and get on the defensive and a short fight ensued. Myself and the woman immediately ran to the dogs and as we got there her dog whimpered away. I apologized immediately for anything that my dog MAY have did. The lady noticed a gash on the back of her dogs neck and took here dog to the 24 hour vet service right then and there. Monday I got a call from a dog park official about the woman's complaint and he asked if the woman could contact my wife or I and I said yes. I could have said No. The woman is now asking us to reimburse her for the cost of the vet care as she believes that our dog bit her dog. My dog has never bit
another dog or human before. We have offered to pay half of the costs as we believe our dog is not the only culprit in the situation and due to the fact that it is an open dog park and things of this nature will happen from time to time. We also believe that her dogs instagated the incident by running up on our dog. I have spoke to several people about this and they think we are being more than accommodating by offering half. Many people told me that they would not pay anything. Anyways, the lady has come back to us and told us that half is not enough. If she will not accept half, should I not pay anything and tell her to go pound sand? And if I do this what legal recourse would she have in regards to getting money from me. I want to help her out, but I don't believe my dog and I is the only guilty party and are deserving to pay the entire cost. For more back ground info my dog is a chocolate lab/ husky mix and the dog park requires you to pay a small yearly fee to use where one must show vet records to gain access. My dog is very socialed as well and has been around many dogs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Go Cats.
