Just to prove my memory is still intact, even though spelling skills have receded:
In August 1967, i was coaching an American legion team in the state tournament at Great Bend, Ks.
That morning I had breakfast at the hotel with Burleigh Grimes. For those of you too young to remember he was the last MLB pitcher allowed to throw a spitball legally. {A tip of the hat to Gaylord Perry who did it illegally for years}.
During our conversation he told me something that would apply to present day Royals pitcher matt Strahm. It refers to the way Strahm takes his signal from the catcher, he bends over from the waist when he has a runner on 1st. Burleigh maintained that that maneuver would prevent a pitcher from going very deep into a contest because he said,"when you get tired only 2 things revive you, oxygen and rest". He further stated that pitchers prior to Bob Feller had never done that, but having success others followed. A very interesting man who died 8 years later. Wish I could have had more conversations with him. If this story interests you I will tell you about meeting Bob Feller years later.
