Interesting article on Sportsillustrated.com about take out slides in baseball and whether there should be rule changes to protect the fielder. I played baseball all through high school and while not as gifted as some on here played at a fairly decent level, enough to be very familiar with all the unwritten rules about baseball as well as the "right way" to play the game. Call it old school, run hard, slide hard, hard nosed baseball where you can expect to wear one if you show up a pitcher, that kind of thing. That said, I find myself really thinking that they need to address this issue. After what happened to Jung Ho Kang the other day on a slide where the runner slid with his legs way out of the direction of the base, I just can't see a reason why they don't make that play illegal. People were riled up earlier in the year when Lawrie slid hard and late into Escobar at 2nd, and I thought it was unnecessary and somewhat dirty, but much less so than a runner that doesn't even have his feet pointing at the base but rather directly at the outfield. It's not a dirty play by baseball standards right now, but should it be legal going forward if it has the distinct possibility of severely injuring someone? Just curious what others think.
