I'm no expert....but here's how I understand it....
2020-2021 - 2.7 million.....Buyout after April 30th, 2021 = $2.0 million
2021-2022 - 2.8 million......Buyout after April 30th, 2022 = $1.0 million
2022-2023 - 2.9 million......Buyout after April 30th, 2023 = $500,000
So after this year he will only have 2 years left on his contract.....If the season continues this way I can't imagine an Extension of this contract....also I don't know how a Coach recruits next season with a 2 year contract. So for arguments sake, lets say they let him go this year....after April 30th.
Cost - $2 million buyout
Savings - $5.7 million over the next 2 years
That gives you a break even point with a new coach of $3.7 million over the next 2 years.....or basically a Salary of $1.85 million to offer......of course that's just to Break Even.
Numbers would be unknown....but there would be a savings on Assistant Coaches as well
So just using Utah State's Craig Smith as an example for buyout/salary.(the way I understand it)
Buyout after this season = $1.1 million
2020-2021 - $700,000
2021-2022 - $725,000
2022-2023 - $750,000
After paying his buyout at $1.1 million. $3.7 - $1.1 million = $2.6million left for salary over the next 2 years = $1.3 million per year as a "break even" offer....even paying both buyouts as they stand.
So basically you could almost double Craig Smith's current salary for even money with losing Bruce.
Just some random thoughts on a Friday.
