Alright, my old gas grill is finally worn out, so I'm considering buying a new grill, but I don't know if I should get a good gas grill, like a Weber or go with a wood pellet grill? I don't want to spend a ton of money--like $500 or lower or close to that. I have always used a gas grill and have never cooked on a wood pellet grill or smoker in my life. I also don't like to mess with charcoal, so that's out. I usually just make burgers, steak, chicken or hot dogs for the most part. I've never done ribs or pork butts, etc. but have considered trying at some point. So should I stick with a gas grill or make the switch to a wood pellet/smoker?
If I get a gas grill, I'm thinking about the Weber Sprit II 3-burner. But I'm open to other ideas too. I don't need a huge grill. I’m guessing a 3-burner is probably about right for me if I go with gas. I don't cook for more than 4 or 5 people very often at all. I've gone back and forth between getting a 3 and 4 burner. I have had a 2 burner with no side burner for 10 years, so I've been able to get by on that. But obviously a side burner may be nice to have. I've also heard people say they have major issues with side burners, but maybe that's exaggerated.
I’ve also seen that you can turn your gas grill into a smoker, but I didn’t know how successful that is if I ever did that? With what I do, I just have always used gas for burgers, steaks, chicken and hot dogs. I didn’t know how good those are on a smoker or which route to go since I’ve never used a smoker. I also didn’t know if a wood pellet grill would be worth it if I’m not going to smoke a lot of pork butts and brisket, etc.?
Basically I don’t really know if I will want to start smoking a bunch of stuff because I’ve never done it. I might love it or not care for it. I wish I had the experience of trying wood pellet before investing this much. But I’ve heard so many good things about wood pellets that I’m very intrigued. Give me some suggestions, please! I’m curious about both which directions to go—gas or wood pellet and also what specific grills to look at. Thanks in advance.
