Dave Doeren: He said they'd make us tap out; that wasn't very smart

Dave Doeren used a comment from Eastern Kentucky’s weekly press conference as bulletin-board material last week.

EKU might not get much media coverage, but Doeren watched linebacker D’Vonta Derricott say EKU would make NC State tap out. It was an FCS opponent where NC State was a heavy favorite, but Doeren showed it to his team. The Wolfpack won 35-0.

“It was in their press conference. I listen to the press conference every week,” Doeren said Thursday. “He said he was going to punch us in the mouth and make us tap out. I thought our players would like to know that. Not very smart on their end. He was the one who got all the penalties on their defense.”

“… I played it to the team. Then we had our scout team talk trash all week to our offense. It wouldn’t be the first time they heard it on the field.”

For full context, Derricott, who transferred from Kansas State in the winter, was asked about NC State’s offense looking impressive in the 49-21 win over Troy in Week 1.

“We’re not Troy,” Derricott said calmly. “We’re going to go out there and hit them in the mouth, and we’re going to make them tap out. I know they’re going to be prepared, and we’re going to be very prepared.”

Coaches like to say they don't follow media coverage, but we know it's not true. The lesson here is that Doeren is always looking for anything that could bring a little more edge.
