There seems to be a little discrepancy as to how the overwhelming number of P5 athletic departments proceed to hire their football & men's basketball coaches. Search firms are real and they're the standard in today's atmosphere. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but it's a big part of the process.
@bornploopers & @goose seem to not know the whole story. @Aggievillain claims to have quite a bit of first hand experience but states
"most athletic directors are connected enough to do that work themselves. They might form a search committee with other administrators within the program to identify targets, but they don't often outsource that ability."......"The most common is that a search committee is formed in house and the AD performs the search. Outsourcing like you think happens is only if you want to distance yourself from the pooling process for some reason, usually done within administration roles, but not coaching circles."
Interestingly enough, a quick google search based off of a hunch based upon common knowledge reveals this little gem about John Currie:
From Kellis Robinett on July 14, 2012
"K-State paid Todd Turner and his firm, Collegiate Sports Associates, $40,000 to assist in the hiring of Weber. Oklahoma hired the same firm to bring in basketball coach Lon Kruger. And Colorado State reportedly shelled out $250,000 to a search firm when it hired Jim McElwain.
Currie said he bounced ideas off Turner, and benefited from the professional advice"
Bury your head in the sand if you want but this is how things ACTUALLY work, message board conjecture aside
