Seeing Fitz's ku foul stats from last week intrigued me to dig a little deeper. Being the nerd/loser that I am, I decided to total up the number of players fouling out in Big 12 road games for ku over the last 5 years. Since Fitz and d_scott's stats covered ku home games, I thought it would be logical to see what those numbers were in road games. I mean, after all, the same players and teams would be playing ku at home and away in conference...especially the last few years with the true round-robin format. Ku fans want to argue that their superior depth keeps their players from fouling out, as well as teams being forced to foul at the end of games.
As Fitz and d_scott found, over the last 5 years in Big 12 games played in Allen Fieldhouse, 32 opposing team players have fouled out compared to one ku player. The story is completely different when ku hits the road. In ku Big 12 road games over the same 5-year period, 21 ku players have fouled out compared to 23 opposing team (home team) players. Quite a difference, huh? That includes the 2010-2011 season where only one ku player fouled out on the road compared to 5 from opponents. If you only count the last four years, the foul outs are 20 for ku and 18 for opponents at home.
The reason I point this out is because ku fans wanting to defend their superior depth as opposed to incredibly one-sided officiating in Allen Fieldhouse have nothing to stand on when seeing these stats. These are conference games in which ku plays the EXACT same teams each year home and away. Since the true round-robin started, ku has 18 foul outs on the road, compared to 17 by opposing teams. So how can that whole "superior talent" argument hold any water? Same players, same teams, different venues = incredibly different officiating. But we already knew that.
I forgot to put the foul stats by year in ku road Big 12 games. Here they are:
2014-2015 season: ku: 5 foul outs, opponents: 3
2013-2014 season: ku: 8 foul outs, opponents: 7
2012-2013 season: ku: 5 foul outs, opponents: 7
2011-2012 season: ku: 2 foul outs, opponents: 1
2010-2011 season: ku: 1 foul out, opponents: 5
