Golf is one of the few games where we can somewhat measure performance against history with at least some degree of relevance. Jim Furyk just became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to shoot 58. With all the technological improvements, improved physical conditioning, etc. over the years it took 39 years to lower the record by one stroke. By the way, Al Gieberger shot 59 in 1977 on a course measuring 7193 yards and Jim Furyk shot his 58 today on a course measuring 6841 yards using equipment that allows him to hit the ball at least 15-20% further. Not at all hating on Furyk -- I think his performance is great -- just putting it somewhat in perspective.
