A recent investigation found that internal documents by Exxon - one of the leading climate denialist funders in the world - found that back in the late '70s Exxon researchers reported that the burning of fossil fuels causes an increase in CO2 which can cause global warming. Exxon scientists found that increased CO2 could lead to 2-3 degrees of warming, that could lead to catastrophic and irreversible damages. Not surprisingly, Exxon suppressed the release of those documents and when oil prices plunged took the public stance of questioning climate change.
When asked to respond to the investigation, Exxon - who again has been one of the leading voices and funders casting doubt about CC - hedged but did say, "The risk of climate change is real and warrants action."
