The mounting frustration you see on Coach Snyder’s face is less about losing & more about loss of control.....in my opinion.
I think he’s already been given the firm NO on Sean being HC & he doesn’t have any more cards to play......
How did we get here? Here’s my theory..,
2009 - HCBS is hired to “calm the waters” after the Ron Prince/Krause/Wefald contract scandal/disaster. Also John Currie was named AD. I truly believe at this point HCBS was only planning on coaching for a few years. Currie was on board thinking he can hire his own Head Football Coach right off the bat with no messy firing & the blessing of a Legendary Head Coach (a young AD’s dream)
Also, I think HCBS hires an initial staff with a replacement in mind....either DC Vic Koenning(Clemson) or OC Andy Ludwig(Utah).....both were huge “Gets” and both were gone before 2010
2010 - Sometime during this year Sean tells his Dad he would like to now be an actual Coach. HCBS happily agrees.
2011 - 2012 - Huge on field success & working side by side with Sean leads HCBS to start thinking of Sean as the next Head Coach but Bill knows that he doesn’t have the experience......So he decides to stay on for a few more years. Fans are happy......Currie is dealing with Frank Martin mess.
2013 -2014 - More on field success cements the “Sean as Head Coach” idea......
2015 - Bill says this to SI on July 23rd:
“I have a strong belief, and my preference is Sean,” Snyder told ESPN. “He knows more about our football program than anyone. He runs our program. I have great confidence in him.
HCBS & Curries rocky relationship takes a dive....Currie now realizes that he may lose his 1st Major Coaching hire...
*The relationship further deteriorates heightened by the way Currie handled the Martin/Weber transition/hire
2016 - After a 6-7 2015 season...ADJC gains support for a transition plan & identifies Colorado DC Jim Leavitt..... HCBS is initially on board....& a plan is put in to place. Late 2016(according to Bret McMurphy) officials were prepared to move forward with their transition plan(Leavitt as HCIW for 2017....HC 2018) Apparently HCBS axed the plan & Jim Leavitt takes the Oregon DC job Dec. 15th, 2016....
2017 - Feb 15th 2017 Coach Snyder announces he has throat Cancer and the Leavitt plan is scrapped.
*Feb 28th 2017...ADJC is hired by Tennessee.....HCBS outlasts Currie
*April 2017 - Gene Taylor is hired by Kansas State.....with HCBS blessing( presumably to rubber-stamp his choice for the next coach)
*2017 FB Season is a moderate success with the future looking bright. Bill is now really pushing for Sean......this is when the fan/donor push back heats up(after hearing the Leavitt rumor)
2018 - HCBS sheds Senior members of Coaching Staff (Dimel, Hayes) & replaces them with young assistants possibly paving the way for Sean to take more credit for successful season. At this point I think he had already been given a firm No about Sean....So the only thing he could do was have successful seasons to “prove them wrong” about Sean
2018 - Disaster......and here we are
