In stark contrast to his last interview, where he made himself look like an idiot, he actually came across as somebody who's figured a thing or 2 out about MLB... I thought it was well done
The part i'm posting about had to do with the idea behind building the bullpen the way he did. his quote was something along the lines of "we can't get the big money guys to start, so we decided to shut down the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th with these guys" and then "get starters who can get us through 5 competitively"
first, there is no argument, an ace starting pitcher is multiple times more valuable than an ace reliever... (this is my opinion now, not what DM said) however, what are 4 ace relief pitchers worth? with starting pitchers getting close to 30mill/year, to go 7-8 innings every 5 games, how "moneyballish" was dayton to go lock down innings everyday for the same price?
judging by the yankees trying to copy part of the model, it must be working
