If you don't follow Shot Quality on twitter and you enjoy basketball, you are doing yourself a disservice. It really is top notch data analysis.

Over the weekend, he did a poll on what people believed were the most important factors in winning at the college level this season. Over 1/3rd (35.2%) of all the responses was that efficient 3 point shooting was the #1 factor. Defending the Paint came in second at 28.8%, Low Turnovers was third at 22.8% and Finishing in the paint was a distant 4th at 13.2%.

The actual answers were quite different.

The single most important variable that has the highest correlation to winning was Defending the Paint with scoring at the rim being second. 3pt shooting and turnovers were actually 4th and 5th out of the five variables measured and were significantly less important.
